Training/Development and Coaching of Teachers, Speech-Language Pathologists, and Board Certified Behavior Analysts

Drawing from extensive experience with technical assistance in schools in Indiana and Oklahoma as well as collaborative research in schools in New York, and decades of training pre-service speech-language pathology graduate students in AAC, Ralf can provide professional development and coaching on a range of AAC issues including the following:

Supporting parents and families of children who use AAC

Ralf is prepared to advocate for parents and families who have a child who uses AAC or might benefit from AAC. This may include the following: 

  • Supporting the development of relevant IEP goals for their children
  • Navigating the decision whether to explore AAC for their child
  • Guidance on AAC system and intervention selection  
  • Supporting their child's communication at home and in the community
  • Fostering interactions with peers

Review of movie or book scripts featuring autistic individuals and individuals with other developmental disabilities

For many years, Ralf has taught a class for undergraduate students entitled "Communication Disorders in Movies" and, as a result, has developed heightened awareness, knowledge, and skills relative to the representation of individuals with disabilities in movies and television shows. Recently, Ralf was hired by PBSKids to review an episode of "Carl the Collector" which features two autistic characters one of whom uses AAC. He was asked to provide feedback (consistent with best practices) on the authentic use of AAC by the autistic character as well as behaviors of communication partners.
